I believe that my ancestor James C. Caldwell might be the son of David Caldwell, born June 7, 1760 to Robert Caldwell and Mary Logan. Here is what I have found:
James C. Caldwell died in Ouachita Parish, Louisiana on July 10, 1832 but it is not known when and where he was born. James and his wife Minerva Grayson, daughter of Thomas Grayson and Sarah Stuart, had two children. Angelina Caldwell was born on Feb. 4, 1827, married Elcan Heydenfeldt, and moved to California. Robert James Caldwell was born on March 28, 1830 and married Caroline Haskins Douglas McEnery, daughter of Henry O'Neil McEnery and Caroline Haskins Douglas. Some genealogy reports mistakenly list Robert's wife Caroline H. D. McEnery as a child of James and Minerva Caldwell.
James had a brother, also named Robert Caldwell, who died unmarried in Ouachita Parish, LA on April 22, 1841. He also had a brother Logan Caldwell, a sister Rosannah Wallis Caldwell who married a Searcy, and a sister Mary Ann Caldwell who married a Waters. This information came from Minerva Grayson Caldwell who also said that Logan, Rosannah, and Mary Ann all lived in Perry Co., Missouri.
I believe that Rosannah was married to William Searcy and Mary Ann to Joab Waters.
The wife of David Caldwell is possibly Rosannah Logan based on information I found in the DAR publication, "The American Monthly Magazine", Vol. XXVIII, January - June 1906, page 161. According to this article, David Caldwell, born June 7, 1760, was married on July 31, 1781, probably in Washington Co., Kentucky, to Rosannah Logan, born July 14, 1760. They moved to St. Genevieve Co., Missouri (which is now Perry Co.) sometime before 1812 with Rosannah's brother James. It is also mentioned that Phillip Caldwell, brother of David, went to Louisiana at about the same time. Two of the children of David and Rosannah Logan Caldwell were said to be David Logan Caldwell and Rosannah Wallace Caldwell.
In the Coe genealogy "Robert Coe Puritan" published in 1911, Robert J. Caldwell is said to be related to John Caldwell Calhoun, and the obit of Robert's wife Caroline states that Robert was a cousin of John Caldwell Calhoun. Calhoun's mother, Martha Caldwell, is David's cousin.
I would greatly appreciate any information anyone might have on the family of James C. Caldwell.
