Dear Mr. Caldwell,

I am sorry I have been so long in replying to your message. I don't know where the time goes.

The lawyer was Walter Pharr Caldwell (3 Aug. 1823-27 Nov. 1888). From a Davidson College Alumni directory at: www.davidson.edu/administrative/library/archives/digital/alumni/section3.pdf

"Walter Pharr Caldwell, '38 A. M. Davidson College. Taught school York County, SC one year, then in Mecklenburg County, NC, a select classical school. Entered Judge Pearson's law school in '43, obtained County Court license '45, and Supreme Court license '45. Went to Statesville, N. C., '45, to practice law, and at once elected Solicitor of County Court, and remained in office til elected Clerk of County Court and Master io Equity in '52. In '53, Engrossing Clerk House Representatives, North Carolina. '66 District Attorney for the Sixth Judicial District of North Carolina. Reelected under provisional government and remained in office til '74. Lawyer, Greensboro, N. C."

Walter Pharr Caldwell married Nannie Weatherley on 21 May 1857, seven children: Robert E. (c.1859), Maggie (c.1861), Mary (c.1862), Carrie (c.1865), Nannie (c.1867), Daisy (c.1868), and Abby (c.1873). Approximate dates from 1880 census. Walter P. Caldwell died in Greensboro, and is buried at Green Hill Cemetery. There is a picture of his grave monument at the Find-A-Grave site:

My interest in the Caldwells is through Rev. Samuel Craighead Caldwell's wife, Elizabeth Lindsay (c.1784-1825), who was a 5th great aunt of mine. I expect her father, Judge Robert Lindsay (c.1735-1801) was a part of the Nottingham Colony of Scots Presbyterians, who moved from the Md./Pa. border area to what later became Guilford Co., NC in 1753. The Nottingham Presbyterians were, I believe, responsible for bringing Rev. Dr. David Caldwell, S. C. Caldwell's father, to NC. As I recall, the Nottingham colony financed his education if he would agree to follow them to NC and serve as their minister....and what wonderful contributions David Caldwell made to North Carolina during his long life! You truly have an extremely distinguished ancestor.

Best Regards,

John Field Pankow
Asheville, NC
