That's a really good question, one I don't have an answer for. I've seen some census records that list the names of slaves, but I don't know if that was a standard practice or not. I know that some plantation owners listed their slaves in their account books, I've seen one such example in a book on Thomas Jefferson. To be honest, that could be one of the reasons why I can't locate Alfred in any of the earlier census records. He'd just been freed and they weren't recording that information yet.

Please keep me informed on your progress. I'll will be interested to see how it turns out and what you've learned about your family history. I am very glad I was able to offer some help to you. That's what these message boards are all about.
