Calder Family Genealogy Forum

Deborah: I have custody of a rather precious "trove" of old letters and documents relating to the Alexander CALDER family. They belonged to my ex-husband's mother (Harriet Elizabeth Doyle Skala) and have been entrusted to me, supposedly for my son and daughter who are of course CALDER descendants. I have never thought to do much research on this family but these papers are much too valuable to keep under wraps. Among them is a certificate dated October 28, 1825 licensing Alexander Calder to preach in the "Platteskill/Hudson River District." There are some very old, fragile personal letters dating back into the 1840's as well, one of them addressed to the Rev. A. Calder at Kensington, Philadephia Co., PA and is dated 1840. I have not yet tried to transcribe these letters but plan to do so within the next week. According to a cousin of my ex's mother, who wrote her a letter in the 1940's concerning this family, Joseph and Marion Calder emigrated from Edinburg, Scotland in 1794 and settled near Albany, NY. Alexander was born 28 Feb 1798. Alexander married Affa WALDRON, who had children James, Joseph, Levi, Alexander, Frank, Amelia, Rachael Caroline, Miriam Marion "Myra," and Alma. Rachael married Charles Knight; they had Demilt, Affa, Alma, Cora, Charles, and Ida May. Affa Knight married Louis Bernard Doyle, son of William and Melissa Dillon Doyle. Their son Charles Ray Doyle was my ex's maternal grandfather. And so forth. Any interest? Your surname is mentioned in an old letter to my former mother-in-law from Myra Doyle Louderback dated September 15, 1942. She refers to "Miltie" Knight the father of Iva and Charles Knight, going on to say that Iva was married to an ORR and the mother of Ord, Verd, Yale (Gale?), and Ruth.Too much information to include here without knowing how much of it you are interested in.
