In 1880, Nancy Lindsay Calder would have been 93 years old. Family lore is that she died in Washington, in her ninety's. I have gotten that from several Calder cousins from Manitoba, but nothing that proves it. Her daughter, Nancy Anne Calder (another of my direct ancestors) lived to be 93, if that means anything. I have found so many screwups on Census data that I just don't trust them any more. I have one ancestor in Michigan that averages 3.5 years of aging between each census, over 3 different censuses. I have another one that his first name changes on with EVERY census, yet his wife remains with the same name throughout. It gets very confusing, as the 1860 and 1870 census both have the WRONG name. With the Calder's, it doesn't help that the Hudson's Bay Company assigns Horatio Nelson to an entirely different Calder (on their Biographical sheets, his father is listed a John Calder, and he also returned to Great Britain). I think that this is a mistranscription of the data, someone not being able to read the name clearly and putting down "John". I really can't conceive of two different Calder's, both starting families, and both returning to Scotland. But James Calder is not even listed on those Biographical sheets as having married or anything. So yes, I agree that virtually everything on this family is difficult to dig out.
