Thanks for getting back. Because centralized census and birth/death/marriages records in the UK only started in the 1840's to date I've been wary of going back beyond there - as it removes the option of cross referencing and increases the possiblity of error. So to be brief I'm 99.99% certain that William Calder b Dornoch 27 Oct 1799 is my great great grandfather, but beyond that, until now I've not looked. I've just now taken a look at the familysearch.org website to see if I could track down William's parents. The only reference I could find was to a couple by the name of Angus Calder and Betty Gordon who gave birth to William on 27 Oct 1799. My searches didn't turn up any siblings, which is not to say he didn't have any, probably more a reflection of the lack of online records. But there does seem to be a strong liklihood that William's parents were Angus Calder and Betty Gordon. I visited Dornoch in February this year (definitely a very weird experience), and among the useful things I learned was that the population of the village through the 19th century was barely ever above 500. So, for the records I've searched I'm pretty certain I'm certain those I've found have been my ancestors. Not sure if this helps you any with your queries. Do let me know what you think. We're probably related somewhere along the line - if not in the late 18th/early 19 centuries. Best regards David O'Byrne - son of Violet Elspet Calder Needham, granddaughter of Elspet Calder, daughter of William Calder and Ann Sutherland. Notify Administrator about this message?
