Tim: I also am looking for a Sweatte, a most unusual name. In tracking it, I believe it comes from Sweat ... I know my Sweatte line comes from GA but haven't found it so far. GGGrandfather Jim and his brother were US Federal Marshalls in Keokuk Falls, OK. Family myth is that the Sweatte branch "jumped" out of the awful Trail of Tears and passed for white ... thus possibly changing spelling of name. The Cherokee were a highly civilized people and looked actually little different from your average pioneer person. As I go along, if I find anything ... I'll let you know. Our lines are surely related. The Trail of Tears included people from GA, the Carolinas, all over that part of the country. Read some history on it ... tragic. Plantation owners, doctors, lawyers, storekeepers ... all had to give up what they couldn't carry or cart on the trail to Oklahoma.
