Not sure about the number of Calders in SC around the time of the Civil War, but my great grandfather, Alex Calder, lived in Marlboro County SC and is buried there. He married Kitti Norton and they had at least one son Bishop Marvin, my grandfather. Sometime after my grandfather's birth the spelling of the surname changed to CAULDER. When my father retired, he obtained his birth certificate for the first time and discovered his surname was CALDER on it. There are a lot of Caulders in the Marlboro County SC and Scotland County NC area. They are adjacent counties. I don't know if this is useful or not, but thought you might be interested. If you have any info on Alex Calder, I would really appreciate if you would send it to me.

Thanks

Shelton Caulder, Jr.
