british sailor ww2 cairns

in buxton nc there are graves of 2 british sailors whose ship was hit by a german u boat during ww2, and their bodies washed up on shore and were buried by the locals. one of the sailors were unknown, another's last name was cairns, i think michael or stephen was the first name. if anyone might be connected to this gentleman, i'll try to get more info next time i go down there. just wondering why his family never brought him home...
