Madisonville Democrat, (Monroe Co. TN) December 18, 1968, Page 4:
“Cagle, Oldest Ex-Editor of Democrat, Dies---Luther H. Cagle, who was the senior living ex-editor of the publication known as the Madisonville Democrat, died Friday night in Jacksonville, Florida.
Cagle was a brother-in-law pf Mrs. Beth Spurling. His wife was the former Lilly Ghormley.
Cagle and Henry Minnis were co-owners and publisher of the Democrat in 1911-12. They purchased the paper from the late Eli Duncan in the fall of 1911 and sold it to Albert Britton in the summer of 1912. It is not known whether or nor Britton is still living.
The typesetting was done by hand in the days when Cagle was connected with the Democrat. The late Lenoir Duncan and Billy Griffith were the printers.
Cagle, in a letter to the editor of the Monroe County Democrat earlier this year said he planned to “add my two cents worth of other data to the early 20th century history of Madisonville residents such as the Carter and the Cleveland Taylor families.”
The 1914-15 report and announcement of Monroe County Central High School lists Cagle as a member of the Monroe County Board of Education and as the History and French teacher.”
