Peter Caffrey and Mary Tiernan were my great-grandparents. Their son Luke was my mother's father. Luke had a brother, John P., and a sister, Agnes. Agnes joined the convent and became Sister Mary Aquinas. I believe she was the oldest. Luke was the youngest, and he was raised by an aunt (not sure which one--one of Mary's sisters, I think--after Mary died. I had heard that she died when Luke was about three years old--during childbirth or shortly after (no info about the baby, but it must have died too). Peter remarried, but I don't have any information about his second wife other than that my grandfather had a half-sister named Therese.

Luke married Genevieve Ann Wren on October 18, 1922. They had a baby girl who died, then Rose, Leo, my mother Mary Delores, Don, Roger, and Tom. All of those children are now deceased--my mother most recently in June of 2007. Luke and Genevieve farmed near Cresco, Iowa, until moving to Des Moines in the late 1940s. The farm is still in the family with Leo's son Jerry running it. My grandfather was a member of the Howard County Board of Supervisors, and he served one term in the State Legislature in 1949 with my mother acting as his secretary. He was a member of the State Board of Social Welfare.

My uncle Don's daughter told me a couple of years ago that she had discovered that Peter Caffrey committed suicide in 1930. My grandparents had never spoken of this. My mother did not know about it. Peter is buried in St. Ambrose Cemetary in Des Moines (as is Mary). My cousin and I are puzzled that Peter would have been allowed burial in a Catholic cemetary since he had committed suicide.

Luke Caffrey died on March 10, 1970. His brother John, who married but had no children, had preceded him in death but I don't know exactly when. Sister Aquinas, who lived in Chicago as a nun, died a few years after that. Genevieve died in July 1981.

My grandfather quoted Will Rogers to me once, saying "I never met a man I didn't like." He was an extroverted, charismatic person, and I loved being around him.
