I am trying to help my niece with her CAFFERTY/MAGUIRE family tree, and I think they may be connected to the CAFFERTYs you mentioned here. Her ancestor is Bridget CAFFERTY who married Anthony MAGUIRE and lived in Winsted, McLeod County in 1870.
The 1870 US Census information for Winsted, McLeod County, MN:
Maguire, Anthony, 30
Bridget, 35, maybe 25?
Mary Ann, 9
Owen Scott,7 (indexed as Ona Scott)
Anthony, 5
John, 3
Patrick CAVERTY/CAFFERTY is living nearby, on the next page.
I've also found a Bernard CAFFERTY, a Thomas CAFFERTY, and a Margret CAFFERTY in various census records from 1860 to 1880, living by each other in McLeod County, MN. Margret is at first living with a single Patrick, then later with a single Thomas. I believe Margret may be the mother of Thomas and Patrick, and possibly Bernard. I'm wondering if this Bernard is actually the same person as Bryan...their children's names are so similar, and Bernard's wife is named Margaret. Also important to mention that all of Bernard's children are listed as having a birthplace of PA!
Also, I did a search on Minnesota's death certificate index, and found a Patrick Cafferty born in Ireland in 1826, whose mother's maiden name is listed as CUNNINGHAM. I have not sent for the certificate yet so I don't know anymore about it. The date of death was 03/03/1906 in McLeod County, MN.
I am trying to figure out where Bridget fits in, where she came from. The 1870 Census lists her birthplace as Ireland, but the 1880 Census it says PA. On the 1880 Census, Anthony Maguire is living in Grafton, Sibley County, MN, his wife is named Mary, and he has several new children, but his 16 year old son Anthony is still living with him. Anthony Jr has his mother's birthplace listed as PA! I am trying to find documentation as to what happened to Bridget, death or divorce.
