I read the story which Basically has Pvt Perry (a Black American) deserting and Lt Cady (a White NY'er) attempting to arrest him while unarmed and Perry was armed with a rifle. Perry refused to surrender and Shot Lt Cady and ran away to hide in the Jungle. The mood at the time was very racial as Blacks were not given the opportunity to fight (only 6% saw combat out of over 20,000.)

Perry with little opportunity in the Army, was seen by African-Americans as a victim and by White Americans as a Cowardly, drug selling, murdering deserter. In my opinion Perry was a failure as a human being, as Murder and Crime are signs of that failure. Lt. Cady was very brave for advancing on an Armed man. .
