Cady Family Genealogy Forum

Most of my data is limited to 1790 to 1820. So, I do not have much on Cady families that moved west after 1840. My feeling is that after the Census of 1850, it was easier to trace families. Before then it is more diffcult and hazardous. As too many Genealogies tend to bend the facts to fit the desired end.
As an example, I can find little to confirm Benjamin Johnson Cady family. So, I have been working on why that is. Turns out the problem was Religion. Connecticut records by town were listed in the Barbourn records. But, if the Cady's were Methodist, they had no church to keep records at. The Methodist used circuit riders (4000 of them) to preach to their members. Similar problems are what you are facing. When the Connecticut Cady's moved to New York there were no Congregationalist Churches and many went looking for New churches. Baptist, Methodist, and other Evangelical churches fit the bill. People from other states brought the Episcopal (Anglican)and other churches. The result is that for a time there was a gap between the old churches and the New Churches. This lead directly to the Great Awaking of Religion in the 1840's and to groups like the Mormon's, Shaker's and several Communal Societies. Once you realize there is no one answer, but a puzzle that you have to find the pieces and then put it together you have your first corner piece.
