There was a VERY famous traveling minister named Lorenzo Dow in the eastern US in the early 1800's, who has caused regiments of genealogists to look for a "Dow" maiden name or an Italian influence. I did.

Lorenzo Dow (October 16, 1777 – February 2, 1834) was an eccentric minister whose infamy, influence and travels throughout the country led to many thousands of U.S. children of the early 19th century to be named after him. The 1850 U.S. census lists Lorenzo as one of the most popular first names in America. His autobiography at one time was the second-best selling book in the United States, exceeded only by the Bible. He was an important figure in the Second Great Awakening.

Your Alfonzo might be named after someone named after him, with a little mixup of the letters to throw the descendants off the track.
