Lois,
Again, thanks for the recent leads on this ancestor.... your direct descendent, if I understand you correctly. I am anxious to see your research that connects my Edwin Lewis with Benjamin as brothers. Certainly the birth in NY is at the right time and it fits in to the gap I have in my records.
In about 1848 Haziel took his family to Wisconsin and most of them were at home with him. But Watson was up the road with another family during the 1850 census and so was Edwin. I have not yet found Benjamin, who would have been about 16 at the time and may have also been farmed out.
In the Civil war I have Edwin, Myron (Miron) and Charles going off to fight with the 10th Battalion, WI light artillery. I later found that Watson also joined in 1864 but was in the WI 4th Calvary for a short time.
In about 1870 James, the oldest, the youngest, Martin, and their father moved to Spring Valley, MN.
I find a Benjamin F. Cady in Spring Valley in the 1870 census... he is 37 as is his wife, Harriet, making them the right age..... one can presume that they are one and the same.

Here is my problem: this Benjamin says to the census taker that his 6 children, ages 8 to 19, were born in Illinois, making their birth dates 1851 to 1862. Now others on this forum have been tracing a branch of Cadys from NY. There was an Amos living next door to Haziel in Starkey, Yates Co., NY in the 1835 census. An Amos and his brother Ezekiel both moved to Whiteside County, IL. from NY in about 1836.

I have not been able to definitely say that the two Amos are one and the same. Some of the other researchers have told me that they can not connect their Amos with our Haziel. Can we connect your Benjamin with Haziel, Amos or both?

I look forward to seeing your sources.
