Casper Cable Goebel Goebell

Casper Cable was a Hessian soldier, but he was NOT from the principality or state of Hesse as I see mistakenly listed often in this forum. The records released during our bicentennial by the Germans listed him as born in Rodenburg, Rodenhausen, and Dr. Raymond Cable was never able to find such a jurisdiction and assumed that it was near Hanover. There is a Rodenburg and a Rodenhausen, but one is not a division of the other. I don't know if we will ever know for sure.

Goebell/Goebel is a common German name. One of Hitler's main men was a Goebel, remember? but we had been in America for wars/generations before that.

To join the SS troops, Hitler required men to file their genealogies back for generations to prove their pureness. I bet there are some real Goebell/Goebel/Cable records hidden somewhere.

Remember that the "C" and "G" are interchangeable in going from German to English.

I corresponded with Dr. Cable in the 1970s. I have worked on genealogy since Jan 1977. The first letter that I ever wrote in genealogy was to his wife who was selling old magazines or newspapers. It was just a "stab in the dark," one I wouldn't even write now. Dr. Raymond Cable answered me, verifying my descent twice from Samuel Cable, son of Casper. Casper Cable was captured the night that George Washington crossed the Delaware at Trenton, NJ. This is not legend. The records back it up. With a start like that, it is no wonder that I have worked on genealogy ever since.

I have been to the Cable Reunion in Canton, NC, once or twice. The Cables are wonderful, friendly people. The Carter Co. TN heritage book has lots of Cables in it for those from that area. Connections in East TN and other Cades Cove, Blount Co., TN genealogies will also have Cables. There are literally thousands and thousands of descendants from Casper Cable.

The Cables in the area branching out from Swain/Graham Co. NC are descendants of Saumel, son of Casper. Samuel was married to Elizabeth Clarisa Jones whom he married in Carter, now Johnson Co., TN. I believe that her father may have been the Thomas Jones who was located near Samuel and Clarissa in Cades Cove, Blount Co.,TN in 1830 and who was probably from NC via Johnson Co. TN. They named a son Thomas Jones Cable although some people called him Thomas Washington Cable. I have a feeling that he had both middle names. I descend from him too.
