I am doing a back ground on my Jewish side and I know that the Cabaniss, Cabanes, Caviness, Caverdish (& other spellings)were French Hugenots that could of been Jews from Spain before they went into France. They were also refered to as German-Jews by the French Catholics even when they still lived in France. They were forced to go to England then America due to persecution.
Henri Cabaniss abt.1675 France, md.Marie? Had Henry 1815, Matthew 1817, Jeremiah 1818, and my gg grandfather Robert (Reubenn in Hebrew) Caviness in 1822 in Chatham, NC. I was told that they traveled from VA. to NC. in a Cabiniss Caravan together. They were dark skinned, tall, black hair, and had very high cheek bones.
