Confederate General William Lewis Cabell was born on Main Street in downtown Danville Virginia on January 1, 1827. His brother Lt. Benjamin Edward Cabell died in a Confederate hospital in 1862. A brother Dr. John R. Cabell was a Captain during the War. Another brother Col. Joseph Robert Cabell was killed at Drury's Bluff on May 10, 1864. Brother George Craghead Cabell was a Col. and twice wounded during the Civil War. George C. was a Congressman after the War (I have his unabridged dictionary). Their father William Sheridan Cabell, born 1793, served in the War of 1812 and became a General. He was instrumental is the construction of a canal at the Great Falls of Dan River in Danville. He and others began a textile operation from water power from this canal in 1828. Riverside and Dan River Cotton Mills (now Dan River Inc) began on this canal in 1882.
