I've never posted to this board before. I have a few new clues, so maybe someone will read this and be able to make a match. My family comes from a Murry/Milam line. Bettie (Elizabeth) Milum married John William Murry in Ripley, Tippah Co, MS 6 Aug, 1873. Bettie and John had (I believe) 2 daughter's Laura Alice b. 1874 MS and Mildred Clara b. 1875 TN. Bettie died before 1880. John then married, as we're told, Bettie's sister Martha. Martha and John show up in this 1880 census: Census Place: Jackson, Little River, Arkansas Source: FHL Film 1254049 National Archives Film T9-0049 Page 113C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Jno. She didn't like her step-mother and I'm thinking maybe she was in the home of a relative in 1880. I've searched high and low and haven't been able to turn up a marriage record for John Murry m Martha Milam. I'm wondering if you know anything about this family? Could Martha and Bettie have been half sisters? Perhaps their mother had remarried? I found J.P. in some later marriage files in TN, listed as 'performing' the ceremonies. John and Martha did have other children as this 1900 census shows: Arkansas, Polk Co, White Township, 25 June, 1900 line 68 John W. Murry [head] b. Nov. 1850 age 49 Mississippi occ. farmer married 21 years Martha [wife] b. Jan 1867 age 33 Alabama John A. [son] b. Sep 1880 age 19 Arkansas occ. farm labor Mary A. [dau] b. Dec 1882 age 17 Texas James [son] b. Dec 1883 age 15 Texas occ. farm labor Susan [dau] b. Oct 1886 age 13 Texas Charles [son] b. Aug 1889 age 10 Texas occ. farm labor Robert E. [son] b. Apr 1893 age 7 Texas Both Laura and Mildred were married before 1900. I've found death records for these boy's in CA. They list their mother's maiden name as Milam??? These are some clue's my grandmother, Laura gave us as children: She was partial to Mary. She didn't call her by name, but called her Honey. One brother was a police officer of some sort in I believe AR. One brother lost a leg. One brother drowned in a flood in Marysville CA in the 50's. Laura often was called Alice by her siblings and parents. The most common family rumor is that Bettie was full blood Indian, Nation unknown. I believe some of these brother's might still have family in the area. John Allen Murray went by Allen he died Yuba Co, April 12, 1955. James Richard Murray went by Jim and died Yuba Co, Oct. 28, 1957. Robert Murray went by Bob and died Sutter Co, Aug. 7, 1975. Charles Jefferson Murray died Alemeda Co, June 6, 1955. I've now told you every little thing I know about my Milam's and Murray's and pray you can make a match. Phyllis Notify Administrator about this message?
