Am not related but may be of interest to someone who is. I have no further info, but additional newspaper extracts may be found at URL: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php Vern D ///////////////////////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoch ////////////////////////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA ******************************************** >>Saturday, 5 Apr 1862<< FOR SAN QUENTIN -- 2 prisoners from Sonora, en route for the State Prison, arrived in this city on Friday evening, in charge of special deputy GILLETTE, and left on the steamer for San Quentin. One of them (Alexander POWERS) is sentenced for a term of 12 years for the killing of a man by name of SPIER, some 8 months since on the Tuolumne river. The other (DEGRE) is an Italian, sentenced for a term of 5 years for the killing of Capt. REYNOLDS. DEGRE was admitted into the Insane Asylum soon after the killing; but upon his recovery a short time since, he was taken back to Sonora by Sheriff PATTERSON, tried and convicted. Both cases are represented to us by parties familiar with the circumstances, as entitling the guilty party to the extremest penalty. Those who fell victims to their crime were men well known in Tuolumne county -- SPIER being the proprietor of an extensive quartz mill on the Tuolumne, where he was killed, and REYNOLDS one of the oldest and most influential citizens of the county. These are the prisoners whom DAVIS was deputized to take to San Quentin, when arrested in Sonora by officers COOK and BRADLEY, upon the charge of murder. Notify Administrator about this message?
