Go to USGenWeb Project for California, Tulare County website. It has a online database of obits from 1859 to 2000 appearing in the local papers of the bigger cities. Also has a Cemetery index. Below is what I found:
Appearing Dec. 11,12,13 1961 in the Porterville Evening Recorder (PER) CANERDAY, R L age 43
You can buy a copy from:
Sequoia Genealogical Society
c/o Tulare City Library Genealogy Room
113 North "F" Street
Tulare, CA 93274
for $3.50 per obituary. You must send a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your request and include the name and date of death or publication. Make all checks payable to the Sequoia Genealogical Society.

I found R.L. burried in the Woodville Cemetery:

Canterday, Mary Elizabeth b.Oct 12,1912 No Date Row-35
Canterday, R. L. "Mutt" b.May 27, 1918 d.Dec 10, 1961 burial-Dec. 13, 1961 Plot-212 Lot-4 Row-35

I subscribe to Ancestry and found this in their U.S. Obituary Collection database. It is also available for purchase through the Visalia Times Delta Archives section.

Visalia Times Delta Tuesday Dec. 30, 2003
