I'm trying to find some information on my 2ggrandmother's sister Sarah Ann Pope Mechum/Mecum. In my 2ggrandmother Louisa Pope Polley's obit in 1911 is a statement that she was survived by a sister Mrs. S.A. Mechum from Oakland, CA.
I found a Sarah A. Mecum living with Lucetta Mecum Ham or Harn and her husband Matthew Ham or Harn in the 1910 census for Corning in Tehama Co. CA. She is listed as a step mother-in-law. In the 1920 census Lucetta is a widow living in Richmond City, CA, however Sarah Mecum is not listed, so she may have died before 1920. In the 1900 census Lucetta & Matthew Ham are living with their children in Corning Township, Tehama Co.
From research in census records, I found Lucetta listed in 1880 as a single daughter living with her father John D. Mecum in Newville Twnshp in Colusa Co. There is no wife listed.
In the 1870 census Lucetta is living with her father John D. Mecum and his wife Susan in Mon??? township in Colusa Co.
I think Sarah Ann Pope married John D. Mecum after Susan died since she is called step-mother-in-law of Lucetta's husband Matthew Ham in the 1910 census. I don't know if this was the first or subsequent marriage for Sarah Ann. Therefore, if a marriage record exists, it might have her maiden name of Pope or a married name.
Are there any records from this time period that might show a marriage of John D. Mecum and Sarah Ann Pope ? Or a death record for John D. Mecum?
I'm thinking Sarah Ann might also have been married previously because I don't know how she would have wound up in CA otherwise. She was born in NY abt 1848, moved to WI with her family abt. 1855 and then her famiily moved to NE abt. 1865. I don't know if she moved to NE with them, as I can't find her in any records there.
