has 12 people with surname "Babb" in or near Modesto, Ca. If you are not shy and have free weekend minutes, you could call them all. If you do, the first words out of your mouth should be similar to

"I'm a Babb too, and I'm looking for relatives".

(That isn't exactly true, but it is close enough and you can say it quicker than "My husband descends from . . .")

Then assure them you are not selling anything and do not want money.

I have written to everyone in a given county with a given surname three times. I always started my letter like that and always enclosed a SASE. I found some cousins. I didn't find anyone with a family Bible that would make me a Mayflower descendant, but it was interesting. A letter with a SASE is a little more polite than a telephone call. Most people will read a letter all the way to the bottom, at their lesiure.
