> where do I draw the line?
Good question. I don't have a good answer for it.
I'm lucky; Stanislaus County is small, and I can answer all of the obit requests on GF by visiting the library once or twice a month. I've been doing genealogy for six or eight years, and have a number of favors to pay forward. One lady wrote to me "It was a nice day, so . . ." She transcribed a dozen tombstones in a cemetery seven miles from her house for me.
I usually check Ancestry's Stanislaus board before I start scanning microfilm. I forgot this time. If you pick up some obit requests on the the Cumberland county GF board, check the Ancestry one forst to avoid duplicating effort.
