Samuel Barens is father-in-law, not father, so you have a second way to spell Betsy's maiden name. (Try to contain your joy). The fact it says he was born in Ohio here and Illinois on the death cert is a reasonable mistake; since your Joseph is 1 on the 1880, he didn't remember Ohio and probably talked about his boyhood in Illinois. That or the census enumerator muffed the call, or the transcriber erred.

More strong clues, not facts, at

try Gotobed in both the bride and groom field. Those are probably your Joseph's siblings.

There are no people named Gotobed in the current Modesto phone book, nor on the GTE Super pages in all of California.
