There is a RICHARD Preston, a barber, in the 1913 Stanislaus County Guide. Richard' shop is in Modesto. He lives out of town on a RFD route. There is a PERRY Preston, employed as a clerk and a "lab", which may be "laborer", in the 1915, 1916 and 1917 city directory. This doesn't mean Rufus wasn't in Modesto; it just means he wasn't in the directory. Have you tried the 1910 census?
