The Modesto Bee is the newspaper of record for Stanislaus County. It covers the entire county. The Turlock Journal or the Patterson Irrigator would have longer obituaries if your ancestor lived in or near those towns. The Bee gave its old issues to the library, which microfilmed them. I don't know if old issues of the Journal or Irrigator are still around. The last time I asked, the reference desk was willing to look up an obituary and send a copy. They need:

Name and death date

A stamped, self-addressed envelope

A small fee for copying. You could tape a quarter to a 3x5 card. I've had my best luck, in asking for the same service from libraries around the country, with a $5 check payable to the Children's book fund.

Their address:
Stanislaus County Free Library
1500 "I" Street
Modesto Calif. 95354
