A wonderful woman named Myrtle Dix spent countless hours typing up early Stanislaus County marriage records and will abstracts. The main library in Modesto has a copy. It is 318 pages - done before word processors!!!

In it is this marriage record:

HINING, M. F. age 21, b. Iowa
married Ida SHANNON, age 17, b. California [!!!]
14 Nov 1875
C. H. Hining, MG [Minister of the Gospel]
Witnesses: Mr. & Mrs. Shannon
Book II, page 17.

That was close enough, even though Ida's birth state was wrong, that I looked the happy couple up on the 1880 Census the Mormons recently put on-line.

On it, M F is Merida, Ida is born in Iowa, and they have two kids. Ida's parents are born in Iowa and Ohio. So, I think she is George and Melinda's daughter. She was the only SHANNON who looked likely in the book.

George and Melinda are in Fresno by 1880, by the way, again according to the census. They have three kids living at home.
