The following death notice appeared in the Vallejo Evening Chronicle on Feb. 2, 1877:

"Sudden Death

Patrick Fogarty, one of the oldest
settlers in these parts, died very sud-
denly this morning at his ranch, five
miles north of town. He had lately
been in his usual health, and was in
the field all day Thursday. This
morning he got up feeling as well as
usual, and having kindled a fire, set
down to smoke. In a few moments
he complained of an acute pain near
the region of the heart; some of the
neighbors were sent for, but before
they arrived he was dead."
