I am a look-up volunteer on the Shasta County GenWeb page. I have a book of vital records taken from newspapers and other sources, which was compiled by my mother. There are two entries for the Adkins family:

A son born to Mr./Mrs. John Adkins at Huling Creek on 23 March 1874, reported in the Shasta Courier on 4 April 1874. In parentheses my mother noted (John Corliss) which probably came from a census or school record. No other births hit the newspaper.

A death notice for Ellen Mary Adkins, age 20, who died on 10 August 1867 at Eagle Creek, published in the Shasta Courier on 17 August 1867. A note says "Native of New Orleans."

Death notices were not obits and had very little useful information. Maybe Ellen was a sister of John's.
