What old Vital Records/Newspapers available??

I am wondering what vital records are available for research at a Genealogy Society?/Historical Society? Or what newspapers on microfilm are available? I am talking about "really" old. According to family history, a member of the family, Elizabeth Carpenter married Robert Henderson at her Aunt's home in San Jose in November 1850 by the first Governor of California, Governor Coleman. Their son, Lewis Henderson was born there in November 1851, supposedly the first white child born in San Jose (but everyone seems to claim to have the first born in every area).
I am trying to prove or disprove all of the above. And, also, hopefully to find the married name of the Aunt.
