My family was active in the Gilroy/San Jose/Santa Cruz area beginning in the 1860s.Joel Shipp Whitehurst, born in Princess Anne Co., Virginia but raised in St. Joseph, Mo., emigrated to San Jose in that time period and put in the area's first prune orchard. His farm was called "The Willows".The "old home place" was built on what is now Whitehurst Court in Willow Glen, which he named and started.Three of his daughters, Mabel, Hettie Estelle, and Sadie, attended San Jose Normal school, (currently Cal state U. at san Jose), graduating before the turn of the century) and taught in the San Jose area through WWII, having to destroy their birth certificates to do so, since they all were much older than the upper age limits for teaching at the time.I know these women frequented parties at the Henry Miller Estate on Mt. Madonna as well as many other social functions. I wonder if they're in Ms. McDuffee Denton's guest book?If anyone has or wants information about this family, which intertwines with the Logan family, please contact me, and I'll be happy to respond.
