For those trying to locate approximate location of residences from townships, wards, precincts, et al for individuals indentified in census reports, you might tap into URL

http://www.us-census.org/states/california/s-ca.htm#SanJoaquin

which provides some info about the boundaries for these jurisdictions for certain years.

The following extract from the Friday, 9 Aug 1872, Stockton Daily Independent, transcribed by Dee Sardoch, provides some clues about San Joaquin county locations for that time frame.

*STOCKTON TOWNSHIP --
-First Ward: Polls at Pacific Hotel.
-Second Ward: Polls at BRIEDENBACHER’s house.
-Third Ward: Polls at Hilke’s building.

*O’NEILE TOWNSHIP --
-Nightingale Precinct: Polls at 5 Mile House, lower Sacramento road.
-Waterloo No. 1: Polls at John BALKWILL’s house.
-Waterloo No. 2: Polls at Madam FISHER’s.
-Nightingale Precinct: Polls at Nightingale House.
-Union Precinct: Polls at HOSKIN’s store.
-Liberty Precinct: Polls at Campo, KIRKLAND’s store.

*ELKHORN TOWNSHIP --
-Woodbridge Precinct: Polls at Union Hotel.
-Mokelumne Station Precinct: Polls at CRIST’s Hotel.

*DOUGLASS TOWNSHIP --
-Linden Precinct: Polls at J.R. FENNELL’s house.
-Farmington Precinct: Polls at J.A. CAMPBELL’s house.
-Lockeford Precinct: Polls at Lockeford House.
