Hi Gillian,
I had hit a dead-end trying to learn where the immigrant to California, Joseph Adams, came from. He died Oct. 1, 1900 in Stockton; in 1900 death certificated contained very little information, so mother is listed as unknown, and father listed as "Adams". All I know he was born in 1823 in Massachusetts. I am wondering if his father was a Joseph Adams, or maybe his grandfather. But if Sarah Sutherland remarried to a Joseph Adams, still in Co. Durham, the timeline probably wouldn't fit. Unless it might have been to a uncle of Joseph. With two famous presidents, the name Adams is so common in Massachusetts, it makes it difficult to research there. It would be very interesting to know if our Joseph Adams ancestors originated in Durham.
Tim
