Going to New York in the early part of 1856, he took passage on the old steamer "Illinois" for Panama, and crossing the Isthmus, resumed his sea journey on the steamer "Sonora", landing at San Francisco in March.
Was a rancher, merchant, financier, and horse breeder. He was one of the founders of the Bank of Stockton, founder of the Stockton Gravel Company, and head of the Stockton Combined Harvest Agriculture Works.
Buried in Rural Cemetery, Stockton, CA
Lane in Stockton named after him: Shippee Lane.
