State (Year) SSN issued: North Carolina (Before 1951 )
Have you ordered a copy of his original Social Security application?? This is a wonderful document and one of the few that is filled out by the person themselves. Remember a death record is filled out by a family member and can have errors or ommissions on it. Sure worth a try.

type in his name & year he died & California. His record should come up. On the far right is the option to print out a form letter & the address to send it to.
