Hi Marilyn -

In addition to the bases mentioned by Susan, there was Norton AFB [right next to and eventually in San Bernardino] and George AFB in the Victorville area. Both bases closed in the early 1990's. If you go to the county site:
http://www.co.san-bernardino.ca.us/
you can access the libraries, accessor's office, etc. Most of the offices have e-mail and are pretty good at answering it.
For the city itself, try
http://www.ci.san-bernardino.ca.us/. Another source would be the San Bernardino County Sun [www.sbcsun.com] it's been around forever and I've heard folks have had luck with their archives.
