Posted by: Mark Dyer (ID *****2518) Date: November 15, 2005 at 12:02:31

My Great-great-grandfather, Hugh Dyer was born in Scotland in about 1834.

I have traced his decendants to Missouri, California, Iowa, Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma and California.

He immigrated to the US with his brother James and sister Isabella.

They stayed in New York for a year or two and then moved to Scott county Iowa.

James married Sarah Hedges and they settled on a farm in Pleasant Valley, Scott County, Iowa. They never had any children.

Isabella married Dr. Isaac Huston and settled with him in Victor, Iowa County, Iowa. They had several children.

Hugh had at least four wives and 11 children that I know of.

His first wife was Rebecca Taggart and I know of at least five children:
Isabelle, Miran L, James Norval Robert Malcolm Sarah J. James Norval is my great-grandfather.

His second wife was Margaret Wright (1845 - 1885). Hugh and Margaret lived in Kansas and then Joplin, Missouri and they had four children that I know of: Richard Dyer (1873, Kansas), Bertram Dyer, (1874, Kansas) Hugh Dyer (1878, Missouri), and Marion Dyer (1879, Missouri)

His third wife was Julia Baldwin and they married May 10, 1885 in Jasper County, Missouri. They had a female child in December of 1885. This is about all the information I have on this family.

Hugh's forth wife was Elenor and they had a daughter, Rachel, in about 1903. Hugh died in 1914, Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri. In the 1920 census, Elenor and Rachel are in Claremore, Rogers, Oklahoma. Elenor is a cook in the bording house where they live, and Rachel is going to school. This is all I know of them.

--- Decendants of Hugh and Rebecca Dyer.

The 1870 census shows the whole family living in Fort Scott, Bourbon, Kansas. The 1880 census shows Hugh with his next wife and family living in Joplin, Jasper, Missouri. More on that latter. Isabelle, Miran, James Norval and Robert Malcolm are all living with their uncle, James, on his farm in Pleasant Valley, Scott, Iowa.

Isabelle Dyer (daughter of Hugh & Rebecca)

Isabelle was born in December of 1861 and died December 27, 1883. She is buried in Oakdale Cemetary, Davenport, Iowa. Isabelle never married or had children.

Miran L. Dyer (daughter of Hugh & Rebecca)

Miran was born about 1863 in Iowa, married Thomas Tow January 4, 1883. They had seven children that I know of:
Malcolm Dyer Tow (b: 1884, Iowa),
Walter Tow (b: abt. 1886),
Sarah B. Tow (b: abt: 1892, Iowa),
James Oliver Tow (b: 1894, Iowa),
Bruce Tow (b: 1895, Iowa),
Ruth Tow (b: 1903, California),
Andrew Tow (b: 1906, Missouri) Andrew may have spelled his name 'Tau'.

Miran's uncle, James, spent his last days on the Tow farm in Columbia, Boone, Missouri and died there in 1913.

James Norval Dyer (son of Hugh & Rebecca)

James Norval married Finnetta Harriet Lyon and they had two children, Bertha Isabelle (1896 - 1978) and Donald Robert (1898 - 1960). Donald Robert is my grandfather.

Bertha Isabelle married Ralph Wallace Ade. They had several children, some of whom are still living and I have been in touch with.

Donald Robert married Dorothea Eloise Wright and they had two children, James Malcolm, my father and Donald Robert Jr.

Robert Malcolm Dyer (son of Hugh & Rebecca)

Robert Malcolm Dyer married Mary Yeisley (1869 - 1929), daughter of Ruben Yeisely (1835 - 1902). Robert and Malcolm had two sons. James Eugene Dyer who was born in 1895, in Iowa and Robert L. Dyer, who was born in about 1902, in Chicago, Illinois. In the 1910 census the family is in Seattle, Washington.

James Eugene married Helen B. In 1925, they had a daughter, Helen J and in 1930 they were all living in Portland, Oregon.

Robert L Dyer married Elenor G and they had a son Robert L Jr. born 1916, in Washington. They were all still in Seattle for the 1930 census.

Richard Dyer (Hugh and Margaret)

Richard married Grace Ledden February 28, 1897 in Chautauqua County, Kansas. Richard and Grace lived in Oklahoma and finally settled in Los Angeles, California. They never had children.

William Dyer, abt. 1901, Robert (Max) Dyer, 1902, Elizabeth Dyer, abt. 1904 and Mary Agnes Dyer, 1906.

In the 1920 census, Margaret appears married to Festus Chapman living with Bert's children near where Bert's brothers live.
In about 1929, Robert married Evelyn Jane Dufau who had two daughters, Clemantine and Delores Defillipo. Eveyln died in 1996 in Carmichael, Sacramento, California. Robert was also known as Max and died in 1952 in California.

Bert's daughter, Mary Agnes Dyer, married Mr. Robertson and died in Monterey Park, Los Angeles, California in 1992.
