Wm Luther Shot by Miner in CA 1851

Hello,
A couple of my Luther ancesters were goldminers in California. At that time the family lived in Illinois, near what is now Chicago. William Luther would have been in his twenties in 1851 and his older brother John Jacob Luther (my GGGGrandfather) would have been 29 years old. John returned to Illinois and the family later removed to Iowa. The following is all that we have documented about William:
"In 1851, William Luther was accidently shot while seeking to separate two feuding miners who were fighting with guns, while in a gold-digging camp in California. It was where he and John were among the gold seekers."
If anyone could give me guidance as to how to move forward, I would sure appreciate it. I have no idea of where in California this occurred.

Thanks,
Wally Luther
