Hello to all,
Hoping to find a lookup angel....or otherwise knowledgeable researcher to help with my research.
I am looking for any information regarding the death of George Hite COOK, who died in 1908. He may be the half brother to my ancestors Mary Cook Adamson and Eliza Sandefur Williamson. The only information I have comes from a newspaper article from 16 July, 1917 from Belleville, St. Clair County, IL.
"BELLEVILLE WOMAN SEEKS $50,000 FORTUNE
"Mrs. Mary Adamson Prosecuting a Claim In Court In Sacramento, Cal.
"A hearing is being held in Sacramento, Cal., today which is expected will result in the inheritance by Mrs. Mary Adamson of the Rock Road of $50,000.
Attorney Luke H. Hite of East St. Louis want to Sacramento the latter part of last week and will represent Mrs. Adamson at the hearing. The inheritance is from the estate of George Hite Cook who died in 1908. Mrs. Adamson claims to be a half sister of Cook who when he died had no known relatives.
The estate of $50,000 is in cash and real estate. Sometime ago the assistant attorney General of California visited East St. Louis and made an investigation following the claim of Mrs. Adamson that Cook was her half brother.
The hearing on the claim is now in progress."
I have contacted the Attorney General's office, and they told me that they don't have an archivist, and that they only deal in criminal cases, not probate. He also told me that "he couldn't tell me" who had probate information, or where it was located. Seemed odd to me, but... whatever.
I do know that Eliza's (our direct line) parents were Durham Sandefur and Mahala James. Evidently, Durham died, and Mahala remarried to a man named John Cook - they married 28 May, 1846 in Greene County, IN. This family is located in Wright County, MO in 1850 (Census) and in Taney County, MO in 1860. John had several children from previous marriage(s), one of whom was Mary, who later married Andrew Adamson. George would have been John & Mahala's son, and half-brother to both Eliza and Mary.
Any guidance as to how to research in California, what records are available, etc. will be greatly appreciated. I will be happy to do look-ups in Illinois, and have some information from North Carolina (Rutherford - Old Tryon Counties) if that would be of use to anyone out there. Contact me either through this forum, or directly to E-mail.
