John Franklin HERRICK/JONES, CA, 1870's

I am looking for information of any kind on a William JONES, who married Emma SHAW in 1870. Emma had a son, John Franklin "HERRICK", who was born April 4, 1871 in Bath, Placer Co., California (this town no longer exists), but was not married to her 2nd husband James Edward HERRICK until May 1874 in San Francisco. John Franklin HERRICK is my Great-Grandfather and it appears that he may be a JONES by blood then adopted by HERRICK when James married Emma. Any help on fitting the pieces of this puzzle together would be greatly appreciated.
