Need 1890-1910 RECORDS info

I have a puzzle: I recieved some thoughtful help recently, telling me that the 1900 Census in Napa county, page 57, gives the

birthplace of resident William Graham as CANADA.

I was told the record is very difficult to read, but that "Canada" is fairly clear.

William is husband to Emilie, and they are parents of Harold, William, Karl and Donald, all of them residing at Napa in 1900, and showing in that census.

But, family heresay and my own recent work on this line suggest to me that William ought to be found born in NEW YORK, not Canada.

To resolve the "CANADA VS NEW YORK" birth problem, I am hoping there may be some kind of record out there that can provide another clue.

Advice will be appreciated.

Robert
