court records Monterey county

I have recently learned that my grandfather was imprisoned at San Quentin in 1927. He served at least 3 years, I think. I am wondering if there is a way to get information regarding his case. He was charged and sent from Monterey county.

His name and number at the prison was 44080 Lewis Choate. He was convicted of assault to commit murder and arrived at the prison on 9-8-1927.

I am interested in any court records or newspaper articles that would pertain to his case. Can anyone tell me how to obtain this info?
