Sutton Bible ca. 1800s, ref. Soledad
Posted by: Darrin L. Parker, Esq. (ID *****5356) Date: August 14, 2002 at 19:11:12

We have a Bible in our possession which reads as follows:
_________

[Inside Front Cover]:

“April 1st, 1872” [numerals “76” written to the side]

“Woodend” [?… hard to read]

“Mary Sutton given to her by her affectionate husband H. Sutton”

_________

[Inside Back Cover]:

“Death of Mother and Father”

“Mother died on March 17, 1899”
“buried on the 20[th] of March in old [c]emetery at Soledad [California] just after I returned from Bakersfield [CA].”

“Father died on Jan 7 1916”
“buried on Jan 8 in Feresters [or Teresters] Cemetery at Soledad [California].”

___________

As far as the death and burial information for the persons listed as “Father” and “Mother,” it is unclear if they refer to Mary _____ Sutton and H. Sutton, or one of their parents.

But the writing in the back cover appears to be different from that of the inside cover, so the death and burial information may indeed be that pertaining to Mary _____ Sutton and H. Sutton.
___________

comment on this particular Bible itself:

The Bible is a Catholic version (Duffy collating the Clementine Vulgate, the Douay OT and Rhemish NT, as well as various English Versions) authorized and printed in Dublin, May 4th, 1857. A List of Irish bishops follows. The Bible reads “Douay Bible” on the spine.

____________

Does anyone have connection to this Sutton family (or know to whom they may connect) ?

Darrin L. Parker, Esq.
