The Social Security Death Index: Frederick E. Still, born 13 July 1930, died 19 Nov 2000, "last residence:" Cedarville, Modac County, CA. The "last residence" on the SSDI is NOT necessarily where the person actually lived. The Social Security Administration simply refers to it as being the "Home of Record," which could mean any record the SSA had on the individual. It is NOT necessarily tied to a benefit to him or dependent, or the death benefit. So, he may or may not have lived there at the time of death, or not at all. His SSN was identified as being 566-28-4100. Since you are trying to identify his parents, I would suggest ordering his application for this SSN. The application (SS-5) contains the names of the parents (at least the ones he recognized as being his parents), where he was living when he applied, etc. http://genealogy.about.com/od/online_records/a/ss5_request.htm# The Modoc County Auditor/Recorder does not have a website, thus no online records. This office could identify if he had recorded any documents, deeds, power-of-attorney, marriages, liens against him, etc. Their phone number is 530-233-6205. http://www.cdph.ca.gov/CERTLIC/BIRTHDEATHMAR/Pages/Modoc.aspx This is also the site for obtaining death certificates, but I would NOT suggest ordering as you don't know, at least from the SSDI, that is where he lived. He married Virginia Andrews b: Aug 15, 1950 Lakeview, Lake Co, OR: -Do you know anything more about Virginia and this marriage, when/where did it occur, did it continue or end in divorce? If it ended, any idea on where? If you know where, a copy of their divorce decree could identify where he was living (at least at the time of divorce). The marriage location could identify at least where he was living at that time. Cedarville, as you probably know, is in a remote area, the local newspaper "might" have had his obit (if he lived there, lived there long enough to develop friends, AND someone to pay for the obit). I did a number of additional searches, cemeteries, Modoc genealogy page, searches for him and Virginia, without success. I looked at the other suggested places...they won't help you in your search. The Cedarville library is VERY small, open two days a week for six hours. The librarian "might" get bored enough to answer a couple of questions on the phone: Is there a local phone book for 2000? Is there any records kept of obituaries at the library? What is their suggestion to obtain one. If they are really bored and the county finances allow them to do a "ask-a-librarian" type questions, they might help. Do NOT expect this in a larger town or city. I would suggest posting on the Rootsweb message board under family name of "Still." Modoc County doesn't have a Rootsweb board, which surprised me as it usually has many more viewers than GenForum. http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.still/mb.ashx Ron Bestrom Tacoma, WA Notify Administrator about this message?
