Charles was listed 3 Nat'l Homes...the last, Sawtelle in Los Angeles.In 2 homes he is single, as on 1900 census; the other home he is married, but there is never a NOK listed.
He died 5-19-1904 from an "accidental skull fracture"

1900 census Chas b 2-1844 New Zealand; immigrated 1845, in US 55yr, and is naturalized. Looks like he was in NZ abt 5 minutes! I doubt very much the Chas nat. in 1896 CA is the same person.It doesn't look like he was in CA this time period.IF!! his father was nat., Chas would've have been automatically nat., along with all his siblings, if all were minors at the time.
I wasn't able to locate Chas on any census, other than the 1900.I'm finding very few people b NZ 1850/60/70/80 census.
