On Ancestry old newspapers, the only article that came up on first search. Syracuse, NY of all places.
"The Post Standard" 26 Oct, 1960
In brief, says 4 men killed and 1 maybe missing from cave in that wrecked part of Newell Creek Dam 12mi. north of Santa Cruz. Buried in 25ft of dirt.

Everett McIntosh, 60
Alton L Thomas, 31
Gerard Kenley, 30
They were drilling holes to sink concrete shafts to strengthen the dam.
