INRE Erica: I think there's a pretty good chance that Elizabeth Curtis O'Sullivan and Benoni Irwin knew each other. As far as I can guess, she may have been a cousin of his wife, Adelia Curtis, through her father, Lucian Curtis.
What makes your data specially interesting to me is that it may identify a factor in Benoni's stay in California. However, I haven't read the newspaper article in question.
