1870-1880 disappearances

I have 2 families which seem to have literally disappeared (well almost) between the 1870 and 1880 censuses. They were in Big River, Mendocino County during the 1870 census. One family: Felix Armstrong, wife and 2 children completely. The other family John Armstrong, wife and 4 children - 3 of the children are found in the 1880 census with a family named Beattie (sp?) in Ukiah, Mendocino, CA. I'm wondering if there were deaths from smallpox, flu or any other reason all these people disappeared. Any input to this will be greatly appreciated. TIA Roberta
